GREEN VALLEY LINES: 25KV AC FEASIBILITY STUDY

We’re working with Transport for Wales to build renewable energy into their plans to electrify the train lines north of Cardiff. That means our tech can work even better - we can find the very best places to install solar panels and actually build the plug-in points in those spots.

As part of our Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) funded study, we also looked at the potential to use community wind turbines to power the trains. We identified the criteria required to connect solar, wind and energy storage to the 25kV AC traction power system, and found that approximately 40% of the total traction energy demand could be supplied by direct-wire solar and wind energy.

Our free report is available to download from the RSSB website here (you will need to register for a free account to download).

As a follow-up to this work, we are currently developing a low-cost, modular power electronic device to convert the output of the renewable generation into the requirements of the 25kV AC railways. Please get in touch for more information.

RIDING SUNBEAMS IN INDIA (2022)

In 2018, the government approved plans for 100% electrification of railways by 2023. In July 2020, IR stepped up its target to net-zero emissions by 2030. Achieving this target could lead to an annual emissions reduction of at least 15 million tonnes of CO2, which could help meet 5% of India’s NDC target.

This report examines IR’s net-zero plan in detail and presents the results from a groundbreaking study analyzing the total share of IR’s traction load.
